The Kyger Open Space Improvements project is an exciting venture set to enhance recreational amenities in the area. This project, set to begin construction in fall 2024 with anticipated completion in spring 2025, will provide numerous enhancements.

The Kyger Open Space improvements include expanded parking capacity to provide better access for visitors and the addition of non-motorized boat access to the reservoir to enhance fishing accessibility. The project, backed by a total budget of $890,000, includes $735,000 from the Park and Trail Fund and an extra $140,000 obtained through the Fishing is Fun Grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

During the construction phase, it's essential to note that the east parking lot of the Kyger Open Space, along with the trail around the reservoir, will be temporarily closed to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

Once construction is complete, Kyger Open Space will feature a variety of recreational amenities. Visitors will enjoy a robust trail system that seamlessly connects to the Poudre trail, along with non-motorized boating access and enhanced fishing opportunities.

As of Tuesday, Feb. 11, the northeast portion of the Kyger Trail is closed for reservoir shoreline rehabilitation. Part of the work includes bank rock protection efforts, which uses riprap to protect the shoreline. Riprap is a type of rock used to prevent erosion by absorbing and deflecting the force of water. While construction is underway, the east parking lot and trail around the reservoir will be closed through mid-March.

This project is a critical part of keeping the reservoir's bank stable, ensuring that the improvements made will last for years to come. This work is part of the Kyger Open Space Improvements Project, which focuses on the open space enhancements as a whole, as major step forward in enhancing outdoor recreation in the area. This project began in 2024 and will bring expanded parking, easier access to the reservoir for non-motorized boats and improved fishing spots.

All construction is weather-permitting and subject to change. To learn more about the bank stabilization project that resulted in this trail closure, visit windsorprojectconnect.com/KygerRipRapRepair.
